About
Agnes Morgan (October 31, 1879 – May 25, 1976) was a director, playwright, actress, composer, book writer, and theatrical producer whose Broadway career spanned from 1921 to 1927. Born in Le Roy, New York, to Frank H. Morgan, a newspaper editor, and Sarah L. Cutler Morgan, a schoolteacher, she pursued her education at Radcliffe College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1901 and a Master of Arts in 1903. In 1904 she studied at George Pierce Baker's 47 Workshop at Harvard University.
Morgan's professional identity was shaped largely by her long association with the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, where she served as director, stage manager, lighting developer, occasional actress, and playwright simultaneously. Between 1915 and the Playhouse's closing in 1927, she directed thirty-one of the forty-four dramas the organization mounted, in addition to dance and festival productions. Alice Lewisohn Crowley, writing about the Playhouse, credited Morgan's direction of Shaw's Great Catherine and Lord Dunsany's The Queen's Enemies with establishing her particular gift for burlesque and satire. Morgan came to the Playhouse on the recommendation of teacher Sarah Cowell Le Moyne, who knew Helen Arthur, the lawyer who became Morgan's partner. Alice Lewisohn described Morgan as "quiet, serious, watchful."
The Grand Street Follies, the Neighborhood Playhouse's annual in-house burlesque revue, originated as the inspiration and creation of Morgan and Arthur. What began as an entertainment for subscribers evolved into a production that transferred to Broadway, with Morgan's credits including the Grand Street Follies of 1924 and the Grand Street Follies of 1929. Her Broadway credits also encompass A Hero Is Born, The End of the Dance, The Man with Three Wives, and other productions. Crowley noted that Morgan's talent for sharp satire had defined the Follies and generated what she called "an infectious vogue on Grand Street and Broadway."
Following the Neighborhood Playhouse's closure in 1927, Morgan established her own company, which initially operated under the Grand Street Follies name before becoming Actor-Managers, Inc., a venture that continued until 1939. She directed eight Broadway productions between 1927 and 1935 and also directed three plays for the Federal Theatre Project. In 1931 she wrote the play If Love Were All under the pseudonym Cutler Hatch and directed the production herself.
In 1940 Morgan was appointed associate director of the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, a position she held for thirty-two years, until 1972. Her partner Helen Arthur died on December 10, 1939. Morgan died on May 25, 1976, in San Bernardino, California.
