About
Agnes Ethel (May 1, 1845 – May 26, 1903) was an American stage actress born in New York City, where she would build her theatrical career during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Her married name was Agnes Ethel Tracy.
Ethel began her training under the guidance of actress Mathilde Heron (1830–1877) and made her stage debut in Camille in 1868 at Jerome's private theatre in New York, located on the southeast corner of Twenty-Sixth Street. Following that debut, she spent approximately a year studying and taking on minor parts before advancing to more prominent roles.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1869 to 1871. In August 1869, she appeared alongside Fanny Davenport in Dreams, a comedy by T. W. Robertson, which opened at the Fifth Avenue Theatre on August 16 of that year. On February 15, 1870, Ethel took part in the first American production of Frou-Frou, staged by the Augustin Daly stock company at the Fifth Avenue Theatre on 24th Street; other cast members included Kate Newton, Davenport, and George Clarke. That same year, in June 1870, she appeared in Fernande, also at the Fifth Avenue Theatre. She additionally performed in Horizon, Rose Michel, and Checkmates during this period of her career.
In September 1872, Ethel appeared in Agnes at the Union Square Theatre, a play written expressly for her by Victorien Sardou. The production ran for one hundred nights. She was particularly noted for her ability in emotional roles.
Ethel retired from the stage at the height of her career, choosing private domestic life. She devoted herself to charitable work and provided assistance to struggling actors and actresses, returning to the stage on only two occasions, both times in support of charitable causes.
In October 1873, she married Francis W. Tracy, a millionaire from Buffalo, New York. Tracy died in 1886, and his will was contested in court by his first wife on behalf of her daughter; the entire fortune was ultimately awarded to Ethel. In October 1890, Ethel married Clinton DeWitt Roudebush; that marriage ended in divorce in 1901. At the time of her death, she was engaged to theatrical manager Francis Mahler, though the wedding had been postponed due to her prolonged illness.
Ethel died on May 26, 1903, at 80 Irving Place in New York City, of heart disease, which had begun approximately a year before her death. She is buried in Buffalo.
