About
Adrian Lester is a British actor born Adrian Anthony Harvey on 14 August 1968 in Birmingham, England, the son of Jamaican immigrants. His father, Reginald, worked as a manager for a contract cleaning company, and his mother, Monica, was a medical secretary. His maternal grandfather, James Lester, arrived in the United Kingdom in 1954, with his wife Mabel following a year later. Monica herself grew up in Jamaica under the care of her grandparents until 1960, when she joined her parents in Birmingham at the age of 14.
Lester began singing as a boy treble in the choir of St Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham at the age of nine, and took up acting with the Birmingham Youth Theatre at fourteen. After completing his secondary education at Archbishop Masterson RC School and spending a year at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, he won a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1986, graduating three years later in 1989.
His stage career began in earnest in 1991, when his portrayal of Rosalind in Cheek by Jowl's all-male production of As You Like It earned him both an Ian Charleson Award commendation and a Time Out Award. The following year he played Paul in the UK premiere of John Guare's Six Degrees of Separation at the Royal Court Theatre alongside Stockard Channing, a production that subsequently transferred to the West End's Comedy Theatre. In 1993 he appeared as Anthony Hope in the National Theatre's production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, receiving an Olivier Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical. His performance as Robert in the Donmar Warehouse production of Stephen Sondheim's Company brought him an Olivier Award win, and his work in the title role of Hamlet earned him a Carlton TV Theatre Award.
Further stage work included the title role in Henry V at the National Theatre in 2003, and the role of Brick in Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Novello Theatre in London in 2010. In 2012 he portrayed Ira Aldridge in Red Velvet, a play written by his then-wife Lolita Chakrabarti. His 2013 performance as Othello at the National Theatre, opposite Rory Kinnear as Iago, resulted in both actors sharing the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor, a distinction the judges awarded jointly after being unable to separate the two performances. In 2018 he played Sky Masterson in a Royal Albert Hall production of Guys and Dolls. In 2021 he appeared in a live-streamed production of Hymn, also written by Chakrabarti for the Almeida Theatre, co-starring Danny Sapani and performed under COVID-19 social distancing protocols.
Lester made his Broadway debut in the 2021 production of The Lehman Trilogy, directed by Sam Mendes, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play in 2022. In 2025 he made his debut with the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing the title character in Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. In January 2026 it was announced that the production would transfer to the Noel Coward Theatre in London's West End.
On British television, Lester is widely recognized for playing con artist Michael "Mickey Bricks" Stone in the BBC series Hustle from 2004 to 2012. His character was written out of the fourth series and replaced by Ashley Walters before Lester returned from the fifth series onward. Earlier television work included a 2000 BBC feature-length drama, Storm Damage, for which he received an EMMA Award nomination for Best TV Actor, and a two-part episode of Silent Witness in 1997 in which he played Danny Morris. He appeared on the American sitcom Girlfriends from 2002 to 2003 as Ellis Carter, and had a major guest role in Channel 4's police drama The Ghost Squad in late 2005. He starred in the BBC drama Bonekickers in 2008 and played the character Myror in a 2009 episode of Merlin. In 2024, Netflix announced that Lester would play the role of Destiny of the Endless in the second season of The Sandman.
His film credits include the role of campaign manager Henry Burton in Mike Nichols' Primary Colors (1998), which earned him a Chicago Film Critics Association nomination for Most Promising Actor, and the role of Dumain in Kenneth Branagh's Love's Labour's Lost (2000), for which he received a British Independent Film Awards nomination. He also appeared in The Day After Tomorrow as Simon, one of three researchers who freeze to death early in the film. He filmed scenes as a research scientist in Spider-Man 3 (2007), though his footage was cut from the final theatrical release.
Lester was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2013 New Year Honours and promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2020 Birthday Honours, both for services to drama. He received honorary degrees from the University of Warwick in July 2013, the University of Birmingham in December 2013, and De Montfort University in July 2019. He holds a fourth dan black belt in Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo. Lester married actress and writer Lolita Chakrabarti in 1997, having met her while both were students at RADA. The couple had two daughters and lived in East Dulwich, south-east London before divorcing in 2024.
