About
Adora Andrews (March 19, 1872 – September 18, 1956) was an American stage actress born in Denver, Colorado, whose career spanned from the 1890s to the late 1930s. She appeared on Broadway from 1900 to 1936 and built her professional foundation in stock companies, working with Sadie Martinot and Charles Frohman.
Early in her career, Andrews attracted attention beyond the stage. In 1898, newspapers published her photograph on account of a white silk gown she wore that was trimmed with approximately 5,000 beetle wings used in the manner of decorative beads. That same year, she was the subject of a series of illustrations demonstrating a pompadour hairstyle, during which she described her preference for arranging the style lower than the Paris pompadour, in a figure-eight configuration rather than with a tight pug at the back.
Andrews accumulated a substantial list of Broadway credits across more than three decades. Her first documented Broadway appearance was in Arizona during the 1900–1901 season. Subsequent credits included Her First Divorce in 1913, Roly-Boly Eyes in 1919, Lollipop in 1924, Money from Home in 1927, The 19th Hole in the 1927–1928 season, Smiling Faces in 1932, False Dreams, Farewell in 1934, and Tovarich in the 1936–1937 season.
Her work extended beyond Broadway. Andrews starred in the national touring company of The Great Divide in 1908 and served as a principal in the summer stock company at Cook Opera House in Rochester. Also in 1908, she starred in The Rose of the Rancho when it opened the Grand Opera House in Winnipeg. Her screen work included a role in The Middleton Family at the New York World's Fair in 1939.
Andrews died at a nursing home in Rye, New York on September 18, 1956, at the age of 84.
