About

Adolf Philipp (January 29, 1864 – July 30, 1936) was a Hamburg-born composer, lyricist, book writer, director, and performer who built a significant career on the Broadway stage. In addition to working under his own name, Philipp employed two pseudonyms, Jean Briquet and Paul Hervé, which he used in connection with his compositional and writing work across numerous productions.

Philipp was born in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and demonstrated an early aptitude for the theater. One of his first notable works, The Poor Nobleman, achieved a run of one thousand nights in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, and was staged in major cities throughout the German Empire. He emigrated to the United States in 1889 and was naturalized as an American citizen on June 2, 1898. His work increasingly reflected an interest in depicting German-American life for theatrical audiences.

Before establishing himself in New York, Philipp founded the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Theater in Berlin, which operated with limited success between 1904 and 1907. He then turned his attention to New York City, where he found a far more receptive audience for his musical comedies and plays. His Broadway career as a performer, composer, and book writer spanned from 1907 to 1912, and his broader involvement in New York theater extended through 1934. In 1912, he opened the Adolf Philipp Theatre in Manhattan on East Fifty-Seventh Street.

Among his Broadway credits as a performer, Philipp starred in From Across the Pond and appeared in the play Kultur, the musical The Midnight Girl, and the musical Two Is Company. As a writer and composer, his output was prolific. From Across the Pond (1907) featured a libretto he co-wrote with Mortimer M. Theise, as did Two Islands that same year, which carried music by Louis A. Hirsch, E. Ray Goetz, and Harold Orlob. Alma, Where Do You Live? (1909), a lyrical comedy in three acts, drew on his German-language work Alma, wo wohnst du? and was adapted with music credited to his Jean Briquet pseudonym. Teresa, Be Mine (1910) featured music by Jean Briquet alongside lyrics by Philipp, derived from his German-language book Therese sei nicht böse, attributed to his Paul Hervé pseudonym. Auction Pinochle (1912) carried music and book by both Jean Briquet and Philipp himself, adapted from the French Une Partie de cartes, credited to Paul Hervé. Adele (1913), a French operetta in three acts, featured music by Jean Briquet and Philipp, with book and lyrics co-written with Edward A. Paulton. The Midnight Girl (1914) and The Girl Who Smiles (1915) followed a similar collaborative pattern with Paulton, both drawing on French or German source material attributed to Paul Hervé. Two Is Company (1915) was likewise a collaboration with Paulton, based on a French libretto credited to Paul Hervé. Kissing Time (1920) was based on a libretto by Philipp and Paulton, while Kultur (1933) was written by Philipp alone. Hotel Alimony (1934) was adapted by A. W. Pezet from a farce Philipp co-wrote with Max Simon.

Two of Philipp's theatrical works also reached the screen. Alma, Where Do You Live? was adapted as a film directed by Hal Clarendon in 1917, and The Corner Grocer, directed by George Cowl, appeared the same year.

Philipp's frequent collaborator in business matters was his brother Paul Philipp, who worked as a Broadway producer. Paul was the father of Robert Philipp, recognized as a noted American Impressionist painter, who in his earlier years performed on stage in Europe in productions associated with Adolf.
