About

Adelaide Augusta Keim (February 15, 1879 – June 25, 1946) was an American actress whose career spanned Broadway, touring stock companies, and vaudeville. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of Henry Grant Keim, a milliner who also served as her manager and as manager of the Harlem Opera House, and Mary Agnes Morrissey Keim. Her younger brother Chauncey Keim went on to become a theatrical producer. Keim received her education at St. Joseph's Academy in New York.

Keim's professional stage career began in 1898 under the management of Daniel Frohman, with early appearances at his Lyceum Theatre. Over the course of her Broadway career, which extended from 1898 to 1912, she performed at several notable venues including the Garden Theatre, the Fifth Avenue Theatre, and the Bijou Theatre. Her Broadway credits included Trelawny of the 'Wells' (1898), At the White Horse Tavern and Twelve Months Later (1900), Terence (1904), The Prince of India (1906), and The Right to Happiness (1912).

Among the most distinctive achievements of her career was her portrayal of the male title role in Hamlet in 1905, which she performed in Baltimore, New York, and Chicago. Critic George C. Jenks wrote of her performance that year, describing it as a thoughtful and impressive rendering of the Prince, while noting the audience's awareness of a woman in the role. Beyond Broadway, Keim remained active in touring stock companies and on the vaudeville stage, and in 1918 she appeared in Kate Douglas Wiggin's Mother Carey's Chickens in Maine.

In her personal life, Keim married fellow actor Allan Louis Murnane in 1910. The couple settled in New Rochelle, New York, and had two children, Adelaide, born in 1914, and Allan, born in 1921. Keim died on June 25, 1946.
