About
Adam Godley is an English and American actor born in Amersham, England, to Jewish parents — a magistrate mother and a solicitor father. He grew up near Watford and attended Rickmansworth School in Croxley Green. His acting career began at age nine in a BBC radio production of Hemingway's My Old Man, and his first stage role followed at age eleven, when he played Prince Giovanni in The White Devil at the Old Vic. Early stage work also included productions at the National Theatre, among them Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine and Close of Play, directed by Harold Pinter. He gained wider national recognition in 1984 when he played the lead in the BBC television adaptation of J. Meade Falkner's Moonfleet.
In 1986, Godley joined Alan Ayckbourn's theatre company in Scarborough for three seasons, appearing in productions including June Moon and The Revengers' Comedies, both of which transferred to the West End, and Mr A's Amazing Maze Plays, which transferred to the National Theatre. He subsequently spent a season with the Royal Shakespeare Company before originating the role of Cliff in Sam Mendes's production of Cabaret at the Donmar Warehouse in 1993. Further stage work included Mouth to Mouth at the Royal Court, The Front Page at the Donmar, and The Rivals in the West End. At the National Theatre, Godley created several roles, including Kenneth Williams in Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick and the title role in Howard Davies's production of Paul. In 1999, he played John Worthing in a West End production of The Importance of Being Earnest.
Godley made his Broadway debut in 2002, playing Victor Prynne alongside Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan in a revival of Noël Coward's Private Lives at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The performance earned him a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. That same year, he appeared in Claude Lelouch's film And Now... Ladies and Gentlemen, starring Jeremy Irons and Patricia Kaas, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, marking his film debut. In 2003, he appeared in the Christmas film Love Actually, and subsequent film credits include Around the World in 80 Days (2004), Nanny McPhee (2005), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), and The Theory of Everything (2014).
In 2003, Godley starred as Michal in Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman opposite Jim Broadbent and David Tennant at the Royal National Theatre, a role for which he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In 2008, he played Raymond Babbitt in the West End production of Rain Man opposite Josh Hartnett, and in 2013 he led a new adaptation by Dennis Kelly of Georg Kaiser's From Morning to Midnight at the National Theatre.
Godley returned to Broadway in 2011 to play Lord Evelyn Oakleigh in the Roundabout Theatre's revival of Anything Goes, a production that also starred Sutton Foster, Joel Grey, John McMartin, and Jessica Walter. The role earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, a Drama Desk Award nomination, and an Outer Critics Circle Award. His Broadway work continued with Once Upon a Time and, most recently, The Lehman Trilogy, in which he played one of the three Lehman brothers. The production originated at the National Theatre in 2019, where Godley received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play alongside Simon Russell Beale and Ben Miles. When the production transferred to Broadway in 2021, Godley earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play, alongside Adrian Lester and Simon Russell Beale. In total, Godley has received two Tony Award nominations and four Laurence Olivier Award nominations.
His television credits include the recurring role of Elliott Schwartz in AMC's Breaking Bad from 2008 to 2013, Nigel Nesbitt in Suits in 2013, Jocelyn Pugh in Lodge 49, and Phinneus Pogo in The Umbrella Academy from 2019 to 2024. He also appeared as Archie the Archbishop in The Great from 2020 to 2023, and in 2010 played Jonathan Powell in the HBO television film The Special Relationship. Additional television appearances include A Young Doctor's Notebook, The Good Wife, Homeland, and The Blacklist. In 2023, he portrayed pollster Darwin Perry in the Succession episode "America Decides." Godley is a naturalized American citizen and lives in the Los Angeles area.
