Abner Biberman

Abner Warren Biberman (April 1, 1909 – June 20, 1977) was an American actor, director, and screenwriter whose career spanned Broadway, Hollywood film, and television. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was the son of Jacob M. Biberman (1884–1964) and Fannie Biberman (née Nahin, 1885–1922). The family subsequently relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Biberman received early acting experience as a student at the Tome School for Boys preparatory school and later attended the University of Pennsylvania.

His stage career brought him to Broadway between 1934 and 1938, during which he appeared in several productions. His credits from that period include Peace on Earth, Sailors of Cattaro, Winterset, Roosty, and The Eternal Road, among others.

Biberman transitioned into film work during Hollywood's golden era, where his appearance made him a sought-after presence for roles as heavies and characters of various foreign nationalities. He was sometimes credited in film and television work under the pseudonym Joel Judge.

He later built a substantial career as a director of episodic television, working across a wide range of genres. His directing credits included series such as Gilligan's Island and Hawaii Five-O. Biberman died at his home in San Diego, California, on June 20, 1977. His obituary in The New York Times recorded his age as 69. He was survived by his wife and three sons.
