About

Abbe Lane, born Abigail Francine Lassman on December 14, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American singer and actress. The daughter of Abbey and Grace Lassman, she grew up with a brother, Leonard, and began performing as a child actress on Vitaphone and radio at the age of four.

Lane's stage career began in her teenage years, initially under the name Abbe Marshall, a billing she adopted possibly in honor of her father, who went by the name Abbey. Under that name she appeared in two Broadway productions: Barefoot Boy with Cheek in 1947 and As the Girls Go in 1948. Her Broadway work continued into the following decade when she portrayed the role of Bobo in the 1958 musical Oh Captain!, which starred Tony Randall. Her recording contract at the time barred her from contributing to the show's original cast album; Eileen Rodgers performed Lane's songs for that recording, and Lane subsequently recorded the material on a solo album of her own.

Early in her career, Lane built a substantial following in Europe, where she was recognized as an actress before gaining wider notice for her singing and dancing. She became the first female star of Italian television, appearing in various programs beginning in 1955, and made 21 films in Europe during the early part of her career. She also hosted her own television program there. In 1952, at age 19, Lane married Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat, who was more than thirty years her senior. The marriage brought her into close contact with Latin and rumba musical styles, which became a defining element of her sound. She and Cugat appeared together on talk shows until 1963, and they divorced in 1964. They had no children together.

Throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s, Lane worked extensively as a nightclub singer and recorded for both RCA Victor and Mercury. Her discography as a solo artist includes Be Mine Tonight, a 1958 collaboration with Tito Puente and His Orchestra released on RCA Victor, as well as The Lady in Red and Where There's a Man, both recorded with Sid Ramin's Orchestra for RCA Victor in 1958 and 1959 respectively. She also recorded Abbe Lane with Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra and The Many Sides of Abbe Lane, both released on Mercury in the 1960s and produced by Hal Mooney. A later solo album, Rainbows, appeared on Butterfly Records in 1980. Her collaborative recordings with Cugat include Dancetime with Xavier Cugat, Ole!, Cha Cha Cha, and Meet Xavier Cugat and Abbe Lane.

Lane appeared on a wide range of American television variety programs, including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Steve Allen Show, The Jack Paar Program, The Mike Douglas Show, The Hollywood Palace, The Joey Bishop Show, The Merv Griffin Show, and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, spanning the 1950s through the 1970s. She also took guest roles in dramatic and comedic television series including Naked City, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Flying Nun, F Troop, The Brady Bunch, Hart to Hart, and Vega$. Her final film appearance came in Twilight Zone: The Movie in 1983, in which she played a minor role as an airline stewardess. In the later 1960s she appeared in several Italian films as well.

In December 1964, Lane married theatrical agent Perry Leff. The marriage lasted until Leff's death in 2020 at age 93. Together they had two sons, Steven and Andrew. In 1992, Lane authored the semi-autobiographical novel But Where Is Love?, published by Warner Books, which drew on memories of a teenage girl married to an older man. Lane received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6381 Hollywood Boulevard in recognition of her contributions to television.
