About

Aaron Hoffman (October 30, 1880 – May 27, 1924) was an American playwright, musical book writer, composer, and lyricist born in St. Louis, Missouri. His career spanned multiple entertainment forms, including vaudeville, Broadway, and silent film.

Hoffman established himself as a prolific writer for vaudeville, producing material for a wide range of performers. Among those who drew on his work were Lew Dockstader and the comedy duo Weber and Fields, and his writing circulated broadly among vaudeville comedians of the era.

His Broadway output included both plays and musical comedies. His stage credits encompass the play Give and Take, the play The Good Old Days, the play Light Wines and Beer, the musical Nothing But Love, and the musical The Newlyweds and Their Baby, among other productions.

Hoffman also worked in silent film during the 1910s, contributing scripts and scenarios to pictures including Beloved Rogues (1916) and several films featuring actress Olga Petrova. His play Two Blocks Away provided the source material for the 1926 film The Cohens and Kellys, which became the first entry in a six-film franchise of the same name.

Hoffman's papers from the 1900s through 1926 are held by the Billy Rose Theatre Division at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
