About
A. B. Imeson (1875 – 28 February 1944) was an English actor who worked in both stage and film. His Broadway career spanned from 1902 to 1929, during which he appeared in productions including Thais, Mary Magdalene, The Only Way, and the revue Wake Up and Dream.
Imeson also established a presence in British silent and early sound cinema. He made his film debut playing Satan in the 1916 silent production The Picture of Dorian Gray. That same year he appeared in Disraeli, and he continued working in film throughout the following decade, with credits including Ave Maria (1918), The Breed of the Treshams (1920), and a cluster of productions in 1923: The Harbour Lights, Out to Win, The Monkey's Paw, Bonnie Prince Charlie, The Virgin Queen, I Will Repay, and The White Shadow. His film work continued into the mid-to-late 1920s with What the Butler Saw (1924), The Notorious Mrs. Carrick (1924), Second to None (1927), Spangles (1928), and False Colours (1927), the last of which was a dramatic short film directed by Miles Mander featuring Ursula Jeans and produced using the sound-on-film Phonofilm process. He appeared in two further films in 1929, The Burgomaster of Stilemonde and After the Verdict.
The National Portrait Gallery in London holds a portrait of Imeson painted by Alexander Bassano.
