About
A. B. I. Imeson was an English stage and film actor born in 1875 who died on 28 February 1944. His career spanned both the stage and the silent and early sound eras of British cinema.
Imeson's screen work began with a role playing Satan in the silent film The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1916, the same year he appeared in Disraeli. He continued working in film throughout the following decade, with credits including Ave Maria (1918), The Breed of the Treshams (1920), and a cluster of productions in 1923: The Harbour Lights, Out to Win, The Monkey's Paw, Bonnie Prince Charlie, The Virgin Queen, I Will Repay, and The White Shadow. In 1924 he appeared in What the Butler Saw and The Notorious Mrs. Carrick.
His film work continued into the latter half of the 1920s with Second to None and False Colours, both released in 1927. False Colours was a dramatic short film featuring Ursula Jeans, directed by Miles Mander, and produced using the sound-on-film Phonofilm process. Spangles followed in 1928, and he appeared in both The Burgomaster of Stilemonde and After the Verdict in 1929.
Alongside his film career, Imeson maintained a presence on the stage. In 1927 he appeared on Broadway in the play Escape, marking his contribution to the New York theatrical world during the same period in which he remained active in British cinema.
The National Portrait Gallery in London holds a portrait of Imeson painted by Alexander Bassano.
